McCormick Place Event Center

We triumph over the tight construction schedules, crowded downtown locations, and long span challenges that often come hand-in-hand with building stadiums, convention centers, and exhibition halls.

TCO Vikings Practice Facility and MN Vikings Headquarters

Location: Eagan, MN
Owner: Vikings
Client: Kraus-Anderson
Contractor: Kraus-Anderson

Project Details

Known as the Vikings Lakes site, the project consists of several structures that DCCI was involved in building. Viking’s Lakes is a world class environment that consists of over 3 million square feet of training facilities, corporate office space, medical, retail, entertainment, and multi-family housing.

The first buildings DCCI built were the MN Vikings Headquarters and Twin Cities Orthopedic (TCO) Vikings Practice Facility.  These two facilities consist of 3,265 tons of structural steel and bar joists.  The MV Vikings Headquarters is a 2-story building plus roof.  The HQ’s construction began with the TCO Vikings Practice Facility.  This facility is 110’ tall, 420’ long and 220’ wide. The DCCI team produced engineered plans to pre-build the structural steel walls into frames on the ground one bay at a time with all of the HSS girts with the heaviest pick at 88,000 pounds.  We also built the roof trusses full length and in pairs on the ground to avoid using shoring towers.  Each truss pair weighed around 80,000 pounds.

Danny’s Construction was also involved with the erection of a number of the subsequent Vikings Lakes buildings including the following:

  • TCO Outdoor Stadium
  • TCO Stadium Scoreboard
  • Eagan Orthopedics Surgery Center
  • Vikings SMC Building
  • Vikings STEM Building
  • HAUS Training Facility
  • Omni Vikings Hotel

U.S. Bank Stadium

Location: Minneapolis, MN
Owner: Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority
Client: LeJeune Steel Company
Contractor: Mortenson Construction

Project Details

With seating for 70,000, U.S. Bank Stadium sits in downtown Minneapolis and is home to the Minnesota Vikings. Danny’s Construction Company erected the steel roof which sits over 300 feet tall and consists of 13,000 tons of structural steel, a 1,000-foot-long ridge truss, and queens post trusses that span over 350 feet. Danny’s Construction Company was brought on early to provide design assistance and contribute to the 3D modeling process to help with the overall jobsite coordination and scheduling.  Our in-house team of engineers provided a complete erection plan including shoring, access planning, temporary stability and crane pick plans.

Using Navisworks Tekla, the erection plan, shoring tower placement, assembly areas and crane locations were identified on a 4D model. That model was used throughout the project for everyday jobsite coordination.  The erection schedule for this project was extremely aggressive and although we were working on a zero-float path throughout the project, we were able to complete the roof two weeks early.  In addition, Danny’s Construction Company exceeded the project workforce and business goals while employing over 100 workers.

We were pleased to be working with general contractor, Mortenson Construction, and steel fabricator, LeJeune Steel Company.  Our construction team, comprised of Local 512 Iron Workers and Local 49 Operators, worked in cooperation with our engineering team and safety support to meet all daily expectations and complete another successful project.

Danny’s Construction Company was involved with more than just the erection of the steel roof; we were also contracted for the following scopes of work:

  • Erection and installation of the 5 largest operable doors in the country.
  • Installation of over 9 miles of aluminum and glass handrail both inside and outside of the stadium.
  • Assistance in the installation of the ETFE roofing – installing both ETFE pillows and components on each purlin prior to erection to accelerate ETFE installation in the air.
  • Erection of over 300 precast panels in the snow catchment.  The snow gutter is as much as 50 feet deep, over 300 feet in the air, and at a slope of more than 38 degrees.

Project Details

The McCormick Place Event Center was designed using 4 main roof trusses, each spanning 250 feet. These were assembled on the ground using Danny’s Construction stanchions. Each truss was built in two sections and hoisted onto our shoring towers. The perimeter of the roof consists of cantilevers, some reaching 40 feet in length. In total, Danny’s Construction erected 2,700 tons of structural steel and over 650 pieces of stadia precast. This arena will serve as home to the DePaul University Basketball Teams.  As the only arena south of downtown, it will also host a variety of events such as concerts, boxing matches and a circus.  With its proximity to McCormick Place Convention Center, it will host Keynote speakers and other events connected to Convention Events. Danny’s Construction collaborated with Clark Construction and fabricator Cives Steel to make this a successful project.

Project Details

Danny’s Construction Company performed the erection of Pinnacle Bank Arena, a 16,000 seat multi-purpose arena that will be home to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball teams. The notable highlight of the project was the roof structure comprised of four 320-foot-long roof trusses, numerous bridging trusses, and purlins. Our construction team of Local 21 Iron Workers and Local 571 Operators worked in cooperation with our traveling superintendent, foremen, engineering and safety support meeting all the daily expectations to make this another successful project.

Nashville Music City Center

Location: Nashville, TN
Owner:  Convention Center Authority
Client: Lenex Steel
Contractor: Bell/Clark JV

Project Details

Danny’s Construction Company erected over 13,000 tons of structural steel. Included were seven 270-foot main span trusses that composed the ballroom roof and thirty-three 240-foot catenary arches that composed the exhibit hall roof.  All 40 of these trusses and arches were set in place using state-of-the-art, computer aided strand jacks. The complex geometry of this structure and difficult downtown site made this project a perfect match for our crews.  Notice the guitar shape of the structure and how it is similar to the rolling hills of Tennessee.

Project Details

Danny’s Construction Company erected both the precast concrete stadia and structural steel on the new Matthew Knight Arena and Practice Facilities at the University of Oregon home to the U of O’s basketball and volleyball teams and at capacity will hold 12,500 spectators.
The structural steel roof consisted of 6 large main span trusses ranging in size from 230 feet to 270 feet in length and 115 to 150 tons, each being erected in two pieces and shored using DCCI’s engineered shoring towers.  Other highlights include the architecturally exposed tube wall framing at the north and south facades of the facility and the nearly 600 pieces of precast stadia, walls, and stairs that DCCI erected. This arena project had a very congested and challenging work site and we are proud to say that the project was completed safely and on schedule!

Target Field

Location: Minneapolis, MN
Owner: Minnesota Ballpark Authority
Client: LeJeune Steel Company
Contractor: M.A. Mortenson with Thor Construction

Project Details

Danny’s Construction Company erected the structural steel for the 40,000-seat open-air ballpark that is home to the Minnesota Twins. Highlights on this project include the 125-foot cantilevered trusses that make up the Metropolitan Club, the fourth largest scoreboard in baseball, the substantial welding, and the amazing sunshade that wraps around the entire infield. Due to the congested, downtown location, the entire stadium had to be built from the inside out with 4 large crawler cranes.
